What You Can Do
Now that we know LOTS about global warming, here’s what you can do:
1. Use fluorescent light bulbs–they lower your energy bill and there will be 700 lbs less of carbon dioxide in the air
2. Refridgerators with EnergyStar labels reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 1 ton
3. Buy hybrid vehicles!
4. Unplug rarely used appliances–saves money & energy
5. Keep chargers unplugged until you need to use them
6. Put your computer on “sleep mode” (or in “hibernation”) when not in use–when you’re done for the day, shut down
7. Try to keep thermostat at 68 degrees on a winter day; 55 degrees at night or when you’re away
a. Wear sweaters or use blankets if you’re too cold
8. In summer, try to keep thermostat at 78 degrees
a. Turn on AC every morning to cool house, turn off before noon and close all shades & blinds
9. Keep thermostat on water heater at 120-130 degrees
10. Keep fridge temperature at 38-42 degrees; freezers 0-5 degrees
a. Make sure doors are sealed tightly
11. Don’t preheat oven or “peek” more than necessary
12. Use a microwave to cook or preheat small items
13. Use short cycle in dishwasher; air-drying is good
14. When possible, use a clothesline to dry clothes
15. Use appropriate water level for load, always rinse in cold
16. Turn off the lights when leaving a room
17. Find ways to stop air from escaping under doors (example–block bottom)
18. Seal gaps around window panes
19. Use rugs or carpets on bare floors
20. Use EnergyStar compact fluorescent bulbs and appliances
21. Replace shower heads with low-flow designs
